Dr. Bertucci or one of our other expert physicians will help you determine which procedure is best for you. Additional or alternative treatments such as microdermabrasion or a chemical peel may also be suggested.

Your procedure will take place in a safe clinical setting at our comfortable facility.

Your skin is first cleansed and a cold gel is applied to the area to be treated. Then, the surface of the IPL hand piece is applied to the skin and very brief pulses of intense light are emitted. A series of pulses is done until the entire area is treated. A full face procedure usually takes 30 – 40 minutes.

Aminolevulinic Acid (ALA), a topical photosynthesizing agent, is first applied to freshly cleansed skin. This solution is then left for a period of 30 to 120 minutes, depending on your personal treatment. Next, the medication is photo-activated with an appropriate light source (such as BLU-U blue light or IPL activation). The entire process takes between 1 to 2 hours.

The treatment area is thoroughly cleansed and a topical anesthetic ointment is applied. After approximately 60 minutes, the laser is directed at the skin and treatment begins. The procedure typically takes about 20 – 25 minutes. After treatment, the anesthetic is removed.

After your procedure, you may be asked to avoid sun exposure until the skin begins to heal. A wide-spectrum UVA & UVB sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher should be worn when outdoors and a mild moisturizer such as Cetaphil or Toleriane may be suggested for any redness or peeling. Drying or irritating skin care products are best avoided until the skin is more stable.

A series of treatments is often recommended to achieve the desired results. Dr. Bertucci or a member of his staff will be able to suggest the appropriate number of treatments for you at the time of your consultation.

Q: Are there any side effects?
A: The skin rejuvenation procedures available from Bertucci MedSpa have a proven history of safety and are performed by trained professionals. Most individuals who visit us for treatment do not experience considerable difficulties. However, during IPL, rarely skin lightening (hypopigmentation) or darkening (hyperpigmentation) can occur. PDT may cause redness, peeling and temporary darkening of pigmented spots. Fraxel treatments may produce some initial redness and superficial flaking for the first few days, and mild swelling or skin discoloration may also be experienced. In both cases, these symptoms are temporary and typically resolve within a few days. Although very rare, scarring and discolouration may occur as a result of these treatments.

Q: What are the advantages?
A: Skin rejuvenation through IPL, PDT and Fraxel laser treatments provides many benefits for men and women hoping to obtain a healthier, more refreshed complexion. Some advantages include:

• Visible improvement in the appearance of the whole face (rather than merely “spot treating”).
• Minimal side effects and very little downtime.
• Fewer treatment sessions required than other non-surgical skin rejuvenation procedures.
• Non-invasive – no needles or surgery are necessary.
• Very positive cosmetic results with less scarring than surgery.

Q: What else can lasers treat?
A: Dr. Bertucci also uses laser technology for tattoo removal. During this procedure, the laser selectively targets tattoo ink particles and fragments the pigment without damaging the surrounding skin. Black or red tattoos tend to respond best to laser treatments. Usually, multiple treatments are needed for the tattoo to fade significantly.
