Getting to Know Dr. Bertucci

If you want to know the man behind the degrees and accomplishments, read on. We asked him:

Q: Tell us about why you do what you do.

A: Early on my parents instilled in me the importance of education in achieving one’s goals. They always encouraged me to ask questions and strive for my best. I derived great satisfaction from making them proud and happy. Their words of praise were my fuel. This desire to please continues to this day.

During my postgraduate training, I realized that dermatology was the medical specialty that resonated most with me. There are three main reasons for this. First, and most importantly, I loved that I could make people happy! It gave me great pleasure to see my patients so relieved and satisfied. Secondly, I loved that I could treat people of all ages. Finally, dermatology allowed me to combine medical, surgical, and cosmetic components in my practice, all of which interested me, ensuring variety and continued stimulation.

During my early years in dermatology, I didn’t fully appreciate the magical combination of science and art for great results. I had lots of book knowledge but I didn’t recognize that achieving the best results required more than that. I always addressed my patients’ areas of concern, but it was only when I embraced the “art” of the practice that I really started achieving outstanding results. I slowly realized that I had a unique ability to see beyond what my patients wanted to what they needed. This ‘vision,’ when combined with my skill set, created fantastic outcomes.

I learned that if I built trust with my patients and asked their permission to share with them my vision, then together we could create a treatment plan better than either of us could alone.

It was then that I started achieving outstanding results and tremendous patient satisfaction. Which ultimately meant happy people…my patients and me!

Q: How do you achieve that purpose of creating happy patients?

I achieve my purpose by providing honest, altruistic advice in all that I do. I always have my patients’ best interest at heart when I make recommendations. Clinically, this translates into prioritizing issues, discarding unnecessary treatments, and selecting only those treatments that have the highest likelihood of achieving the best outcomes.

To keep that advice top-notch, I continually develop myself and my skills. Teaching is often said to be the best way to learn. As early as in elementary school, I realized that I love to teach. I clearly recall teaching a math class and thoroughly enjoying not only the positive feedback but the great feeling associated with being able to distill complex topics into clear, concise snippets of information. Today, I give dozens of talks every year, teaching my colleagues from around the world about my approach to assessment and management of skin concerns. It gives me great pleasure to share my knowledge and expertise.

I’ve also realized that it is through teaching, reviewing the literature, listening to feedback, and constantly reevaluating everything that I do, that I learn and grow such that I am able to continually deliver the latest solutions and best care to my patients.

Clinical research also plays an important role in helping me stay at the forefront of my field. I have taken part in multiple clinical trials, trials that have been pivotal in bringing novel products to market and in optimizing patient care. To stay sharp and to give back, I volunteer as Co-Chair of the Cosmetic Dermatology & Laser Fellowship at the University of Toronto, I was an examiner for the Royal College of Physicians & Surgeons of Canada, and I’m a past President of the Canadian Dermatology Association [I did that one with the hope people might call me “Mr. President”! (haha)]. I am also a reviewer for medical journals, I teach medical students from the University of Toronto and around the country, and I publish scholarly articles and book chapters.

Q: What’s the bottom line in who you are and what you do?

A: I am a dermatologist, clinical researcher, and educator. Bottom line, I hope to be your favourite doctor delivering to you your favourite medical experience. Period.
